p4c Workshop in Austria!

p4c Austria workshop

From July 5-6, Dr. Jackson conducted a very successful workshop with 21 p4c practitioners from four different countries (United States of America, Austria, England, and Switzerland) at the Kirchdorf School in Lustenau, Austria. The event included three p4cHI alums: Doris Dauer, and event organizers Conny Moderle and Maria Rudisser.

From p4cHI to p4cSendai

In June of 2014 five teachers from the Hawai‘i State Department of Education traveled to Sendai Japan to model and practice p4cHI lessons with Japanese administrators, teachers, and students. The delegation of p4cHI teachers included Stephanie Sweeney (4h grade, Waikiki Elementary), Alder Olive (5th grade, Waimanalo Elementary), Noeme Risner (Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate), Kehau Agena (ELA and Digital Media, Kailua High School), Cheriesse Shiroma (Psychology and Philosophical Inquiry, Kailua High School), and Amber Strong Makaiau (UH Uehiro Academy). One of the many highlights of their trip was working with the educational leaders and teachers in Sendai to find culturally responsive ways to transform p4cHI into p4c Sendai.

China Philosophy for Children Hawaii Seminar and Workshops

Teachers shared their thoughts in Jiujiang seminar

Lu Leng, a doctoral candidate of Educational Psychology Department of University of Hawaii at Manoa and a practitioner of p4cHI gave a Philosophy for Children Hawaii (p4cHI) public speech to 350 Jiujiang educators, administrators, and parents in June, 2014 in China. Lu also conducted a seven-day p4cHI professional development workshop with 60 Chinese kindergarten teachers at Lixin More Fun Center in Ruichang city in the middle part of China. p4cHI Professional Development in China

p4cHI Lixin Training

In June of 2014 Ms. Lu Leng traveled to the Lixin More Fun Education Center in China to conduct a seven-day p4cHI professional development workshop with 60 Chinese kindergarten teachers. The teachers are interested in learning more about p4cHI and utilizing p4cHI in their families. The center applied p4cHI in their summer classes soon after the training.

2014 London International Conference on Education

Lu Leng and Dr. Makaiau’s paper titled “Philosophy for Children Hawaiʻi as A Multicultural Education Teaching Pedagogy” has been refereed by peer reviewers and accepted for the London International Conference on Education (LICE-2014) to be held at the Marriott London Heathrow Hotel, London, UK. The acceptance of their paper for publication in LICE-2014 proceedings reflects the high status of their work by their fellow professionals in the field. The paper explores how Philosophy for Children Hawaiʻi (p4cHI), an outgrowth of Matthew Lipman’s original Philosophy for Children movement, enriches James Banks’ multicultural education theory by providing educators with pedagogical tools that help to translate his theory into an effective multiculturalclassroom practice.

High School Legislative Internship Program Pilot

On March 19, 2014 the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education in partnership with Hawai‘i State Department of Education and the Hawai‘i State Legislature co-sponsored an event for public high school students. The work of the Uehiro Academy was highlighted in the afternoon when p4c Hawai‘i practitioners co-facilitated small group break out sessions with the 2014 High School Legislative Interns (LINK) and close to 100 Hawai‘i State Student Council (HSSC) students. In each small group, Uehiro Academy p4c practitioners and the legislative interns lead the HSSC students in discussion-based philosophical inquiries, which explored legislative bills from the 2014 legislative session. This event represents the innovative and exiting new work being done with civics education and p4c Hawai‘i in the State of Hawai‘i. To learn more see

Major Grant from Hawai’i Community Foundation

In partnership with the UH Uehiro Academy, Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate School has received a major grant from the Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF). As part of the HCF’s Connecting for Success Initiative, the grant provides funding for a Philosopher in Residence, p4c Hawaii Professional Development, p4c camps, and several other p4c-based initiatives at the school.

2014 Hawai’i State Teacher of the Year

Matthew Lawrence-and-state-teacher-of-the-year  with abercrombie

Matthew Lawrence of Waikiki Elementary School has been named the 2014 Hawai‘i State Teacher of the Year. The state’s top teaching award is presented annually to a classroom teacher selected from more than 11,000 educators within the Hawaii State Department of Education. Matthew has been incorporating p4c Hawai‘i into his classroom for more than twelve years and was one of the Waikiki Elementary School teachers chosen to share p4c Hawai‘i with schools and educators in Japan. Learn more about his award here.
